Revisiting the Difference Between Mutual Aid and Charity

Another Crimethinc zine that we have turned into a cute little pocketbook. Much has been made of the distinction between charity and mutual aid. Charity is top-down and unidirectional, while mutual aid is supposed to be horizontal, reciprocal, and participatory. In practice, however, the majority of today’s self-described mutual aid projects remain more or less unidirectional efforts to provide goods and services to those in need.

Timothy ★★★★★

The pocket size is perfect for throwing in a bag and reading on the bus, and the content really nails the difference between mutual aid and charity. It’s a compact, thought-provoking read that matches the zine’s usual fire.

Steven ★★★★★

Picked this up because I wanted a more portable version of the Crimethinc arguments about mutual aid versus charity. The pocketbook size is perfect for tossing in my bag and reading during a commute. It's a solid, tight little text that cuts straight to the political distinction.

Finally, a zine that actually fits in my back pocket — this pocketbook format is perfect for carrying around and reading on the bus. The distinction between mutual aid and charity is laid out so clearly, it’s already changing how I think about helping out in my community.
